The Full Story About

The West Jefferson Lions Club 5K

The West Jefferson Lions Club started sponsoring the 5K race 10 years ago.  The Ashe County Christmas Tree Growers Association sponsored our prizes.  This is one of our main fundraisers to help support those visually impaired residents receive eye care and glasses who normally couldn't afford this.  As an International Club we help fund research for eye health related diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer.  We also raise funds to support local needs including school bag meals, shoes for kids, scholarships for H.S. graduates, and many more projects as the needs are brought to our attention.

The 5K race is run every year on the first Saturday in December.  This year the race will be held on December 4, 2021, starting and ending at the West Jefferson United Methodist Church, 107 W. 2nd Street, WJ, NC 28694.

On June 18, 2019, the West Jefferson Lions Club honored long-time member Jim Snyder by naming their 5K race after him – “Jim Snyder Christmas Tree 5K”.

Jim is a well-known distance runner who has run over 550 Marathons (almost 15,000 miles) in all 50 states and Canada.  He is a member of the 50 States Marathon Club.  He ran the Boston Marathon 9 times and has run to the top of Mt. Mitchell and back several times.  When he resided in Graham, NC, he often ran from Graham to Chapel Hill and back.  At his home in the Ashe Lake community, he has a room full of trophies, certificates, and awards as well as hundreds of running shoes from his long running career!

Jim’s participation in Marathons and dedication to the sport of running was recognized by friends and co-workers in 2014 when they dedicated a stretch of NC163 from Nettle Knob Road to Taylor Ranch Road as “Snyder’s Run” in his honor.  This is part of the NCDOT Adopt A Highway Program.

Jim is also a Vietnam Veteran wounded in combat and a life time member of the Jefferson VFW.  He is a cancer survivor and is living with Parkinson’s disease.

In 2014 Jim joined the West Jefferson Lions Club and volunteers his time graciously in serving the Ashe County community.  He has been chairman of the Christmas Tree 5K for the past 8 years.  His leadership has been vital to the success of this race. He is a valued member of the Lions Club and we thank him for his service.
